DESCRIPTION
In her colorful insider's account, Susan Bridge analyzes the bitter struggle that ensued when a sophisticated entrepreneurial leadership tried to diversify and reposition "The Christian Science Monitor" beyond the failing newspaper into radio, the Internet, multimedia publishing, and -- the highest-ticket item of all -- The Monitor Channel, a CNN-style, 24-hour news and public affairs channel. Using the Monitor's story as a focus, Susan Bridge raises fundamental questions about how and whether the public's interest can be served in an age of spiraling costs, competition between print and electronic media, changing public tastes, and undeclared media wars.

4.5
A solid overview and a genuine effort at objective analysis (even though the author was employed by the organization she is studying). Possibly the most interesting part is Bridge's comparison of Monitor Channel start-up costs to CNN start-up costs -- and that the comparison is favorable to the Monitor. Is the book perfect? No. But it is a far-cry better than other assessments of this important chapter in the life of a great American newspaper.Perhaps a general reader will find this book most useful in its depiction of an early, major effort to grapple with the rise of cable news and to escape the financial crisis that threatened(s) the entire newspaper industry.
